A higher probiotic count tells us how many live microorganisms a product contains. It tells us much less about the environment they will encounter, how they will interact with resident microbes, or the biological effects they may produce.
That gap is where MICROBIO’s RESET Microbiome approach begins: with the conditions that shape microbial activity.
Built on more than two decades of pharmaceutical and microbiome research, Symbiota™ translates this ecosystem perspective into ingredient development through precision microbial selection and multi-strain symbiotic fermentation.
Why the microenvironment matters
The microbiome is a living network. Its members share nutrients, produce metabolites and interact with their host. Diet, medication and other environmental influences can alter this network, affecting both microbial composition and activity.
This helps explain why strain counts alone cannot describe the full potential of a microbiome intervention. Adding microorganisms is one strategy; understanding the conditions in which they function is another essential part of the picture.
RESET Microbiome is MICROBIO’s framework for supporting the microbial environment and its interactions. It directs attention toward the relationship between resident microbes, their metabolic activity and host health.
True symbiotic co-fermentation puts microbial interaction to work
Symbiota™ brings selected microorganisms together during fermentation. They grow within a shared, controlled environment, where their metabolic activities can influence one another.
This distinction matters. Blending separately fermented ingredients combines outputs after production. Symbiotic co-fermentation allows interactions to occur while those outputs are being created. Microbial cross-talk and metabolic exchange become part of the production process itself.
The resulting fermentate contains compounds generated through this shared activity. Different microbial combinations provide a basis for developing ingredients with different functional profiles.
The value lies in what the microorganisms produce together
Delivering fermentation-derived activity without live-cell colonization
The published manufacturing process for SymbiotaTM includes anaerobic fermentation followed by heat inactivation and filtration. This produces a metabolite-rich ingredient whose use does not depend on introducing viable fermentation microorganisms into the gut.
For product development, this removes the need to maintain those microorganisms alive throughout manufacturing, storage and consumption. It also creates opportunities to incorporate fermentation-derived bioactivity into different formats. The stability and performance of each finished formula still need to be established under its intended processing and storage conditions.
The technology therefore connects two practical goals: working with microbial metabolic activity and making that activity accessible through reproducible ingredient manufacturing.
Supporting resident bacteria without supplying them as live cultures
An exploratory human study provides a useful illustration of this approach
In 25 healthy adults, researchers evaluated SymbiotaTM over five weeks, with a subsequent follow-up. They reported changes in selected bacterial measures, including increased Bifidobacterium and a lower C. perfringens-to-total-anaerobic-bacteria ratio.[1]

The key insight is that these changes occurred after consumption of a sterilized fermentation preparation. The intervention did not depend on delivering live Bifidobacterium to increase the measured Bifidobacterium population.
This supports the possibility of influencing resident microbes through fermentation-derived ingredients. The study measured selected bacteria rather than the entire microbiome, so it provides early evidence of modulation rather than proof of a complete ecosystem reset.
Published safety research adds another foundation. A 2024 assessment included nonclinical testing and a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 100 healthy adults. The findings supported the safety of the tested SymbiotaTM preparation under the evaluated conditions of use.[2]
A platform extending from nutrition to skincare
The Symbiota™ platform spans nutraceutical ingredients and cosmetic applications, including Symbiota™ 701. This broader scope is central to MICROBIO’s vision: microbiome expertise can inform product development beyond everyday digestive wellness.
Oral and topical applications have different biological contexts. Each requires an appropriate ingredient, delivery format and supporting evidence. A shared technology platform enables related development paths without making their main benefits interchangeable.
